The roots go back further, all the way back to The Who.

Keith Moon up to his usual tricks,  had placed explosives in his bass drum, but overdid it, just a tad.

  2. You got it Brian. Nobody knew and yes, poor Pete was closest to the blast and has always said this is the moment he lost his hearing, apparently his ears were ringing for quite a while. It is really a great moment though, totally iconic…

    Moony didn’t tell anybody what he was up to, so the grand finale was a total surprise to all. This is where Townshend lost most of his hearing.
